Meet Holly Herndon & Mat Dryhurst
Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst are pioneering artists and technologists based in Berlin, Germany. Herndon, born in 1980 in Tennessee, holds a Ph.D. from Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. Dryhurst, from the UK, has roots in London's independent music scene.
The duo has released critically acclaimed albums like "Platform" (2015) and "PROTO" (2019) on 4AD. Their visual art practice includes NFT series and exhibitions, with recent work shown at the 2024 Whitney Biennial. Their latest project, "The Call," which just completed its run at the Serpentine in London, explored AI-generated choral music and data ownership.
In 2021, they launched Holly+, an AI voice clone of Herndon. In 2022, they co-founded Spawning, an organization building a consent layer for AI. Their tools include haveibeentrained.com, Kudurru, and Source.Plus. In 2023, Spawning partnered with Shutterstock and Artstation to opt out 80 million artworks from Stable Diffusion V3.
Spawning’s upcoming release, Public Diffusion, aims to create a “clean” open-source AI image generation model trained only on images from the public domain that is on par with leading AI art systems like Midjourney.
Herndon and Dryhurst were named among TIME Magazine's “100 most influential voices in AI” in 2023 and have been included in ArtReview's Power 100 list since 2021.
