Hans Ulrich Obrist (b. 1968, Zürich, Switzerland) is the artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London. Since his first show "World Soup (The Kitchen Show)" in 1991, he has curated more than 350 exhibitions. Obrist has been at the forefront of integrating technology and digital innovation into the art ecosystem, particularly through the Serpentine's Arts Technologies initiative, which he established in 2014.
At the Serpentine, Obrist has championed the use of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies in art. In 2024, he oversaw a "Year of AI" at the galleries, examining the opportunities and challenges that GenAI poses for the art world. The Serpentine has also collaborated with platforms like Fortnite, attracting 150 million new "visitors" to a virtual recreation of KAWS's exhibition "NEW FICTION" in January 2022.
That same year, Obrist curated the groundbreaking exhibition "WORLDBUILDING: Gaming and Art in the Digital Age" at the Julia Stoschek Collection, exploring the intersection of video games and time-based media art. The show featured over 30 artworks that incorporated elements of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and assorted forms of interactivity.
Obrist has said that 2025 will be the "Year of Video Games" at the Serpentine.
In addition to his curatorial work, Obrist contributes to art publications and has authored numerous books. His recent works include "Gustav Metzger: Interviews with Hans Ulrich Obrist" (2024), "James Lovelock: Ever Gaia" (2023), and "Une vie in Progress" (2023).
