Meet Ryan Zurrer
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to call the venture capitalist and art collector Ryan Zurrer a revolutionary. In fact, he’s been methodically carrying out an insurrection against the traditional art establishment for the past half-decade, pushing to topple its very pillars—the museums, the artist community, the collectors, the art fairs, and the art financiers—in order to make space for digital art.
Based in Zug, the birthplace of Ethereum and heart of Switzerland’s Crypto Valley, Zurrer has fueled his revolution with the proceeds of his crypto-based venture capital firm, Dialectic, an evident money-spinner that harnesses the sector's volatility by offering high-interest micro-loans to traders. Where some people may think it crass to dwell on the financial side of art, Zurrer has applied no small degree of brilliance to leveraging the particle-wave nature of NFTs as both artworks and crypto derivatives in order to accelerate the financialization of art—using his 1OF1 collection to push the ecosystem into uncharted waters.
As for those pillars of the art establishment? They appear to be toppling. In 2022, Zurrer was instrumental in bringing Refik Anadol’s now-famous Unsupervised to MoMA, demonstrating that digital art could be a way to bring massive crowds back to museums post-Covid. This month, Artnews named him one of the world’s top 200 collectors for the second year in a row.
