Meet Matthieu Lorrain

If we believe that the future is already here, just not evenly distributed, then it’s safe to say that a disproportionate amount of the future of culture sits on the desk of Matthieu Lorrain. Formerly the global head of creative innovation at Google, Lorrain was elevated six months ago to become the creative lead at Google DeepMind, the AI research laboratory whose mission is to “solve intelligence” and whose breakthroughs to date have included AlphaGo, AlphaFold, and Gemini. This means, essentially, that he's the arts guy at what may be the most powerful technological rocket ship in the world.

So how does DeepMind approach the arts? Unsurprisingly, Lorrain has to date focused on culture’s biggest popular touch points, leveraging AI to evolve movies and music through partnerships with artists like Donald Glover and The Weeknd. In the course of these projects, however, he has been thinking about art down to the atomic level, fusing science and philosophy into a framework for AI-assisted creativity that he sums up in a simple phrase: “Content is liquid.”

The implications of Lorrain's work are extraordinarily far-reaching, and raise no shortage of questions. How, for starters, will artificial intelligence change the role of the artist? How can we ensure that it is augmenting and not replacing working professionals? And what, exactly, does it mean to keep the human in the loop?

This week, for our ninth live Artwrld conversation, we are pleased to talk to Matthieu Lorrain about his vision for liquid content, and what it means for both the making and experiencing of art.
